“The Atom!” “Nathan Blundell, Jacob Hill and Tom Kirby put up a great battle against some very strong competitors” On Sunday 7th September 8 students in the Greenpower Formula 24 raceing team, together with Mr Barry and Mr Batty, took the car, named The Atom, to the latest round of the Greenpower IET Formula 24 Championship held at the Bedford Autodrome. After the car was successfully passed by the scrutineers, new Team Manager Tom Duvern and Tom Butterfield thoroughly checked all systems in the 90- minute testing session before the Team Manager briefed the race drivers on track conditions and car handling. Race 1 started after a second safety briefing for all drivers and Nathan Blundell, Jacob Hill and Tom Kirby put up a great battle against some very strong competitors. Unfortunately a slow pit- stop lost a few vital seconds and despite a final sector surge by Tom Kirby, we finished the race about 1 ½ laps behind the first- placed kit car from Silverstone UTC and in 11th place overall. After a quick check of the car and a fresh set of batteries, the team enjoyed watching the Formula 24+ racers which was won by the car Jet. Race 2 started with Jordan Emery setting off at a blistering pace, overtaking Silverstone UTC’s car in the first lap, where he managed to steadily increase his lead. Car 117, run by Bexley Business Academy, had a poor start and had to make several unscheduled pit stops. After our first pit stop, Rohan Sahota took the wheel and further pulled away from our nearest rival. At this time the race telemetry system had gone down and Team Manager Tom, Mr Barry and Mr Batty were all busy doing lots of mathematical calculations so Tom could make the strategic decision of when to pit for the final time. This was timed to perfection and Oliver Liddington stormed ahead, opening up a 6 lap lead over our nearest rival, taking the chequered flag having completed 50 laps (a distance of 28 miles) in the 90 minute race, our best performance to date and the first win, securing the Kit Car trophy. The team are now busy working on the car in preparation for the next race in two weeks time at Dunsfold, the Top Gear test track.
