On Friday 6th October 2017, twenty-two year 7 students and twenty-two year 12 sixth formers, travelled to ‘Rock Up’, Birmingham, to launch a year long, peer-to-peer mentoring scheme. The students, young and old, will meet one another each week during Monday tutor time to work on literacy and numeracy skills, have fun, to get to know one another and share their successes and challenges. The climbing wall launch event was the perfect start to the project with partners encouraging one another to evermore demanding physical and mental climbing challenges. When not climbing, students worked collaboratively through ‘challenge packs’ that included mindfulness, creative, English and Maths based activities. Art teacher, Mrs Graham, both conceived the mentoring scheme and will be monitoring the students’ progress throughout the year. If the pilot programme is as successful as we anticipate, we hope to roll the project out to a wider cohort of students next year. A big thanks to Head teacher, Mrs Kibble and Assistant Head, Mrs Hurn who funded the event as well as teaching assistant, Mrs Aldridge who supported the students throughout the trip itself.
