February 2012

Reminders Extra Exam Revision Sessions Timetable Please click here for the Year 10 and 11 Exam Revision Sessions Timetable. Students must bring with them their own revision materials in preparation for the exams in March. Year 11 In preparation for the Maths Linear GCSE exam in March, all students following this course will have a mock exam next week, Tuesday and Wednesday in lessons. If your child is not preparing for an exam in March they will not be sitting a Mock exam next week. GCSE EXAMINATIONS GCSE examination timetables for March 2012 will be issued to students before February half term. Please ensure your son/daughter checks the timetable and if they have any queries to see the Exams Officer, Mrs Phillips in the Data Office, B3.9 at the earliest possibility. GCSE examination timetables for Summer 2012 will be issued to students by the end of February 2012. GCE EXAMINATIONS GCE examination timetables for Summer 2012 will be issued to students the end of March 2012. Please ensure that students have the appropriate equipment for their exams, for example calculator, maths equipment and a BLACK ink pen or ball point pen. Further information can be found by clicking on Curriculum/Examinations. Year 8 GCSE Option Choices 2012 Over the next half term, Year 8 students will be making their Option Choices for GCSE. Last year, an English Baccalaureate was introduced nationally, recognising students’ achievement of A*-C in English, Maths, two Sciences, MFL History or Geography. We would encourage students who are capable of achieving this qualification to think carefully about the subjects they select. Year 8 Parents Information Evening on 22nd February 2012 at 7:00pm and Year 8 Options Workshop Evening on 29th February 2012 at 6:00pm. Please confirm if you are able to attend these important events by using the Online Booking form. It would be helpful if replies could be submitted by Friday 12th February 2012. Four Oaks Cluster Orchestra – Year 7 Students From January Mr R Jeffries will be re-launching the Four Oaks Cluster Orchestra on Friday evenings from 4:00-5:15pm at the Arthur Terry School. Learning an instrument always takes perseverance, but playing as of an orchestra really increases musicality and musicianship. He would love to hear from anyone who either was in the original orchestra or would like to join for the first time. Mr Jeffries would like the orchestra to draw membership from the Four Oaks and Sutton Coldfield areas, and encourage pupils who have been playing for at least one year to join. He will be aiming for some performances, but this can of course only happen with good attendance! Subscriptions will be £2 per week, payable termly. Before the orchestra re-launches, he needs to establish the level of interest and variety of instrumentation – so please get in touch as soon as you can if your child is interested or would like to know more. You can contact him on richmjeffries@googlemail.com. Please also let him know if you would be prepared to help out at rehearsals – maybe you play an instrument yourself or can help with taking the register each week. Community Aspirations Day Saturday 25th February 2012 Were you a pupil at Hill West or do you know anyone who attended the school? We would like to know what you decided to do after you left school? Did you go on to further studies? What career did you choose? Whether you left 10 years or 40 years ago please come and share your experiences with us on Saturday 25th February 2012 for a coffee, cake and a chance to meet up with old friends. Drop in anytime between 10.00am and 2pm. We will have a professional photographer on site to make a permanent record of the day. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing as many people as possible. Staged @ Saturday Morning Drama Classes Saturday morning drama classes are starting again on 7th January at Arthur Terry. Mad Hatters (age 5-8) at 9:15 to 10:45 Artful Dodger (age 9-10) at 10:45 to 12:15 Wild Cats (Year 7-9) at 9:15 to 12:15 Classes last for ten weeks and finish with a performance. Have fun, learn new skills and raise your self-confidence. Come along for a free trial or contact Mrs Bailey on sbailey@arthurterry.bham.sch.uk for further details. GCSE Music Could all parents of Year 11 students please consider buying the CGP OCR GCSE Music Revision guide for your child. It is quite important and although Music will be providing students with a revision CD/guide, it is a really good idea to buy this to support revision and learning in the months before the exam. Thank you, Kieron Williams (Subject Leader for Music). School Communication Year 12 – For emergencies and instant messaging the school uses Groupcall which is a very popular method of getting letters and messages to parents via text and email. However as students advance into the sixth form it is viewed that using text messaging can support your child further by sending reminders and information directly to them. With your support the school would like to trial this change with the current Year 12 students. Initially and in consultation with the sixth form, the facility will just be used for sending text reminders for events such as forthcoming exam arrangements, revision, assemblies and other sixth form events including trips and enrichment sessions. If you are happy for us to contact your child directly via text message please confirm this with Mrs Humphries on shumphries@arthurterry.bham.sch.uk and include your child’s mobile phone number. Vehicles and the School Site In light of our experience since our new site was built may I ask all drivers entering the site to heed the following for the benefit of drivers and residents, but especially for the safety of our pedestrian students. Your cooperation will reduce the risk to our students, improve the flow of traffic and minimise inconvenience for our neighbours. Front of School This area is reserved for emergency and delivery vehicles which need the space to manoeuvre. It may be used temporarily by staff or visitors loading or unloading, or by parents to drop off and collect students when the drop off area is full. We ask taxis to use this area at the end of the day so that our drop off zone is available to parents. Please do not leave your vehicle here unattended. Student Drop Off and Collection We would prefer that you allowed your child to walk into school to avoid traffic congestion around our approach roads, but if you do need to bring your child onto the school site by car. Please enter the school site via Beaton Road and use the drop off zone provided. At peak times please pull in to the nearside before the marked drop zone and carefully rejoin the traffic flow after dropping your child. The collection queue can extend back to Beaton Road. Please do not block through traffic and make your way to the front of school if necessary, as above. Kittoe Road, the Turning Circle and Beaton Road Please do not leave vehicles or wait for students in these areas. Key to avoiding congestion is the one way flow of traffic through school from Beaton Road, exiting via Kittoe Road. The absence of parked vehicles assists this flow and allows safer passage for our walking students. It should be noted that the time limit for the no stopping area in Kittoe Road turning circle is shortly to be extended to 10pm. Please respect our neighbours by not parking in front of or reversing onto their driveways and allow them space to access or leave their property at peak times. Finding a Parking Space After 8-30am spaces become scarcer and you are advised to park in the first space available, which is likely to be in front of the All Weather Pitch, to avoid having to tour the site. In the absence of marked bays please park with consideration for maximising space for other vehicles. Guitar Concert 6th February 2012 www.lethalstringsguitarconcert.blogspot.com Weather If we experience the severe weather conditions of last year we will do our best to keep school open. Should the school be closed the decision will be communicated on the school web-site as soon as practical, through listening to a local radio station such as Radio WM and a text message will be sent to parents. Please enforce with your child the need to be sensible with snow if it occurs to ensure the safety of those in our local community.
