News From Four Oaks Children’s Centre (GOVERNED BY ARTHUR TERRY SCHOOL) Arthur Terry students and alumini increasingly play an active part in supporting the 0-5 year olds who attend events provided by Four Oaks Children’s Centre. The oldest and the youngest students associated with the Arthur Terry School come together on a regular basis in activities like Toy Library, Drama, Holiday activities and Baby signing. Last year sixth form students were recruited as volunteers and some have continued to assist when they are on vacation with holiday activities. Ex Arthur Terry students, now at colleges or in the world of work, have also given their time or skills. For example, Lauren Davies, an ex Arthur Terry student who is now at college has given time on her day off to support our Baby Signing class which takes place at the Four Oaks Cluster Hub on Friday mornings. Lauren, age 17, started off volunteering in her final year of school at our Toy Library as an after school activity and has also been involved in holiday activities and trips. These experiences should stand her in good stead in her future ambitions and career. For the Group Leader, parents and children they find the voluntary assistance invaluable to support the children’s learning and to make sure parents feel welcome and supported. The research behind Baby Signing shows that using signs alongside normal language development enhances early communication. This can reduce tantrums and improve the parent and child bonding which is essential to later social and academic success. Several local parent and toddler groups and Primary schools also use signing either on a daily basis or as part of assemblies or occasional events so baby signing graduates can look forward to using this additional knowledge later in their learning journeys. All children who use signing, whether for a few months, or for a longer time can establish a common language and develop positive relationships with each other and across the community. As you will see Mums, Dads, Grandparents, siblings and multiples can all enjoy the signing experience together!! If you are a young person seeking voluntary work please call Amanda Lansdown on 0121 323 1121. The next 6 week signing course begins on Friday 24th February at the hub – £15 for a 6 week course and is suitable for ages 4 months to 2 years. Please contact the Children’s Centre on the above number for details if you are a parent or carer who wishes to enrol with their baby. Fiona Godwin Four Oaks Children’s Centre Manager School Communication Year 12 – For emergencies and instant messaging the school uses Groupcall which is a very popular method of getting letters and messages to parents via text and email. However as students advance into the sixth form it is viewed that using text messaging can support your child further by sending reminders and information directly to them. With your support the school would like to trial this change with the current Year 12 students. Initially and in consultation with the sixth form, the facility will just be used for sending text reminders for events such as forthcoming exam arrangements, revision, assemblies and other sixth form events including trips and enrichment sessions. If you are happy for us to contact your child directly via text message please confirm this with Mrs Humphries on shumphries@arthurterry.bham.sch.uk and include your child’s mobile phone number.
