Reminders Message from Heads of School and Director of Sixth Form Dear Parents/Carers, Despite the grey skies and rain, we have had an exciting and successful summer term. Please see the Arthur Terry Times for evidence of all of the activities that students have taken part in. For example, we had a thrilling afternoon when an Olympic Torch came to Arthur Terry following its journey from our partner primary schools. We were able to celebrate our students’ sporting achievements, both nationally and internationally as the sporting teams completed a lap of honour in our Atrium. Our continued success is only possible through working in partnership with you. Please reference the uniform list, which accompanies this newsletter, to ensure your son/daughter is properly dressed in September. We pride ourselves on high standards and expectations both inside and outside school and excellent uniform is an important element of this. Sixth Form students are also expected to adhere to the Sixth Form dress code which can be found on the school internet site. You will see attached a link to a document that subject teachers have compiled for your son/daughter. This gives them the opportunity to undertake some activities in their subjects to enable them to consolidate their learning and prepare for their studies in September. These are optional and students are free to choose which activities are applicable to them. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy holiday and are looking forward to welcoming all our students back in September. Start of Year Arrangements Tuesday 4th September – School re-opens for Year 7 and Year 12. Wednesday 5th September – School re-opens to all students. Thursday 13th September – Open evening. Students leave at 12:30pm. Exam Results – Results Day The Summer 2012 results days are: GCE AS/A2 – Thursday 16th August 2012 from 9:30am – 1:00pm GCSE Year 11 – Thursday 23rd August 2012 from 9:30am – 1:00pm GCSE Year 10 – Thursday 23rd August 2012 from 1:00pm – 2:30pm Results will be available for collection from the Dining Hall. We wish you all the best of luck as you receive your results and prepare to move on to the next chapter of your lives. If you are unable to collect your results you may nominate a family member/friend to collect your results on your behalf and they must bring in a letter of authorisation signed by the student No results will be given out by telephone Any results not collected will be posted to the postal address held on file. We have also provided some handy suggestions of suitable skirts and where they can be purchased, as we understand that finding appropriate skirts with current fashion trends can be a challenge. At Arthur Terry we pride ourselves on our high standards and this extends to school uniform. This is just one of the areas where it is vital that parents and school work in partnership to assure success! Please ensure that your child is dressed in the appropriate uniform at all times to avoid disruption to their learning. Parents must consult the attached document before you purchase any uniform. Peripatetic Instrumental/Vocal Tuition 2012/13 Students who currently have music tuition must respond before end of half-term for lessons to continue in September by completing our online form. Year 12 and Year 13 Students need to make sure they are checking both school emails and the 6th Form Blog for information about any Apprenticeships and Job or Career Opportunities which school receives. Sixth form trip to Auschwitz and Krakow During February half-term, 2013 – An information meeting will be held Friday 7th September, 2012 in room C1.9. All students are welcome! It really makes you appreciate the worth of human life! An experience you will never, ever forget! Work Experience 2013 This year the dates are 1st July 2013 – 12th July 2013 inclusive and on Tuesday 25th September 2012 a Year 10 Parents Information and Work Experience Evening will be held at school at 6:30pm. This will be a valuable opportunity for you to learn more about the work experience process, a deadline for finding a placement as Friday 21st December 2012, For more information and to complete the form for the placement please click here. Lost Property and Valuable Items Another reminder that PE kits will not be accepted after the start of the school day. Please be advised that valuable items brought in by students are at their own risk and the school will not be held responsible for them. Tiny Terry If you are a budding artist, interested in building, architecture or Maths then this might be the thing for you. We will be building a small scale model of our school – Tiny Terry. Please see Mrs Kaur or Mr Bradshaw in the Maths department to find out more Maths Newsletter – We are looking for budding photographers, writers, editors, researchers and designers to help launch and run the “Maths Matters” newsletter from September. Please see Mrs Kaur and Miss Oglesby for more information. Birmingham Young Readers Trip Are rap music and song lyrics a valid for of personal expression? Are they as valid as more traditional poetry? This is an issue that we had to discuss at our teen debate on the 12th June. Ten Year 8 students alongside Miss Goode, Mr Francis and Miss Gibson attended the event held at the Central Library in Birmingham. We were met by the fabulously funny characters of Geoffrey Chaucer and the former Birmingham Poet Laureate Spoz. We had to argue for and against the statement: ‘Rap music and song lyrics are not poetry.’ Our super speakers were Emily Joeres, Florence Williams, Molineux Webb and Christie Jones. They all articulated their views confidently, expressing some very insightful ideas about the statement and drawing some inspirational conclusions. In the battle of the wills our students held up effectively to quirky questioning from other schools. It was a great morning that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. We even managed to secure our unanimous decision that song lyrics and rap music are a form of poetry despite the fantastic counter-argument of the very sophisticated lyrics of the Crazy Frog tune: ‘ring ding ding ding d-ding baa aramba baa baa baaroumbab!’ Well done! India Trip February 2014 There are thirty-five student places available for the ‘Incredible India’ trip taking place over the February half-term 2014. The eligible year groups will be next year’s year 9 – 11 students. The trip may sound like a long way off but before we know it, it will be a year and counting! Mr Zarifeh, Arthur Terry’s Citizenship Subject Leader, will be launching the trip application process to students via house assemblies Monday 17th – Friday 21st September. The application process will simultaneously be published on the school website. We are also hosting a parents information evening which will provide parents with an introduction to this exciting trip and will take place on in the school hall on Wednesday 26th September between 6.30 and 7.30pm. the application process will run until the a date to be confirmed in October, following the initial launch in September. PE Department Competition Structure The PE department are developing our intra school house competition structure. Our aim as a department is to ensure as many students as possible are able to take part in Physical Education in a variety of roles. This will see some exciting opportunities for your child to become involved in, not only in the context of the physical participation but in the roles of organising and leading key sporting events, in and out of school. Ultimately, this will help to develop your child’s independence, confidence, ability to work collaboratively with other students whilst nurturing life skills required within their school years and beyond. Membership is from Years 5-8 inclusive, and from September 2012 termly subscriptions will be £25 per term. This is very competitive; in return the choir receives quality vocal and choral tuition from trained directors, as well as opportunities to perform in some fabulous venues! We meet every Wednesday from 4-5.30pm at Four Oaks Primary School in term time. If your child is interested in joining from September 2012, see the contact details below! Joining the Training Choir This new choir gives great opportunity for pupils in years 2-4 to benefit from vocal training and singing tuition. When they reach Year 5, they can earn a place in the main choir that meets each Wednesday. Cluster Training Choir meets every Friday at the Arthur Terry School from 5.15-6.15pm and costs £25 per term. There are still spaces for Summer Term. These are free to all pregnant women and women with a baby under the age of one, and also to children under the age of four. You will need to contact Ranjan Hoath to make an appointment to go along to the Hub to receive your free vitamins, so please call her on 07584 233492. You will need to be living in the Four Oaks Children’s Centre reach area, and also bring along with you an item addressed to yourself with the postcode on. In August there will be two Jo Jingles taster sessions:- Tuesday 21st August: 10.15am – 10.45am 3 months – walking 11.00am – 11.45am walking – 4 years Friday 31st August: 10.15am – 10.45am 3 months – walking 11.00am – 11.45am walking – 4 years New Jo Jingles Music and Movement classes will be starting at the Cluster Hub, Mere Green Community Centre on Monday 10 September.
