June 2014

Welcome to the June Edition of the newsletter Parents Forum As part of Arthur Terry’s endeavor to improve and develop the reporting system we invited a group of parents in to discuss our planned improvements and to demonstrate how they can access Go4Schools, an on line resource for parents to see their child’s progress, attendance and record of behaviour. The evening was an opportunity to seek views about the new style reports and to help us develop useful guidance for parents to explain clearly the information that will be available next year. We know that parental views are vital to the school when implementing whole school change and would like to thank the parents who attended and provided meaningful and constructive comments. The next meeting is taking place in July after which we will be able to provide further information on developments in this area ahead of implementation in the next academic year. Great Midlands Fun Run Well done to all those who participated and completed the run on Sunday 1st June. I hope you all enjoyed the event and feel proud of your success. Please remember to collect and pay in your sponsorship money as soon as possible to enable us to fully support our chosen charities. Also a big thank you to those who supported and encouraged our large ‘orange’ team (certainly we could not be missed!) in many places all around the course. Watch out for next year’s event when we launch it in 2015. Let’s aim to make the team even bigger and raise more for charity whilst having fun, no promises as to the colour of the t-shirts. P Little Poet Laureate Competition Huge Congratulations to the recent winner of our Year 7 Poetry , Saffa Fraz. Following on from last years event, Arthur Terry school hosted a Poetry evening for year 7 students. As usual there was no shortage of talent with some wonderful performances from the students who read out their outstanding poems. To compliment this, the evening was compared by Year 9 Students Will Kirby, Hannah Cook, Elliott Perlic and Maddy Underwood. Singers Kiera Davies and Livia Petit also entertained the audience with their incredible voices ahead of the judging by Daniel Gerrard and Emma Gorewere. The 30 students involved read their poems beautifully and were thoroughly engaging. With the tension rising the winner was finally announced as Saffa Fraz who was awarded the 2014 poet laureate with runners up Helaina Jones and Ben Scholes also putting in worthy performances. When asked about why she had entered the competition Saffa said “I love poetry and thought this is a chance for everyone to hear my poems”. She said “It was an enjoyable evening listening to all the different poems. After I had won, it was amazing. I never thought I’d get through to the final” Wonka’s World Tickets Now On Sale!! Looking forward to another victory in the dry weather next week. Kath Stonebridge -Teacher of PE U13 Netball Tournament – A great result last week for our Girls Netball team who went across to Sutton Girls School to represent Arthur Terry in the district competition. There were 12 teams and the standard of Netball was really high particularly for Year 7 students. The girls did themselves proud and managed to reach the Semi- final against Sutton Girls, it was an great game with both teams playing a high standard of Netball. The game finished with a draw so had to go into extra time, in which Arthur Terry rose to the challenge and in the final minute of extra time scored two incredible goals to win 3-1. This took them into the final, after almost 3 hours of back to back games our girls were exhausted and unfortunately lost out in the final against King Edwards Edgbaston. As runners up the girls received fantastic medals in the final ceremony, they did themselves Arthur Terry proud. OUTSTANDING ATHLETES! The following students have been successful in being selected from the Sutton Coldfield North Birmingham Schools trials, and will now represent the North Birmingham Area Athletics team at the Birmingham championships in Solihull on Sat 14th June. Top performers on the day will be in contention to progress further into the Midlands regional competition and then hopefully national stages! Go Arthur Terry!

It has been a fantastic 9 months for the Year 7 Football team, with a number of successes in their first year at Arthur Terry School! September 2013 saw the Year 7 football trials take place, with over 60 students in attendance to try out for the football team. The effort and attitude of all who attended that day was astonishing and gave me some real thinking to do! We assembled a squad of players and fixtures soon began! The challenge that faces incoming students is not to be underestimated. Often students come from a variety of our surrounding Primary Schools and are then all of a sudden part of the same team. The students soon got to know each other very well and would over the course of the year become a very strong unit. The team started their footballing campaign with a resounding 5-1 win over St Edmund Campion School in the District Cup. They soon progressed again with a 7-1 win over Perry Beeches Academy in the Quarter-Finals. The Cup then took a bit of a back seat until later in the year. The League campaign did not get off to a fantastic start. A very strange fixture away at Kingsbury ended in a 6-6 draw. This was followed by a fantastic match with Bishop Walsh, ultimately resulting in a 3-2 defeat. Rounders’ round up! At the recent Sutton Schools Year 9 rounders tournament Arthur Terry girls managed to regain the trophy for the 3rd year running. It was a hard fought competitive tournament but the training and the commitment from the girls paid off.
