Reminders Summer 2012 Examinations Provisional examination timetables for the Summer 2012 Examinations have been distributed to all students. If you are concerned your child does not have their timetable or there is an error on their timetable please ask them to go to the Data Office, B3.9. Summer 2012 external exams start 11th May and finish 27th June 2012. Please click here for further information. Please ensure that students have the appropriate equipment for their exams, for example calculator, maths equipment and a BLACK ink pen or ballpoint pen. Sixth form students are expected dress smartly for their exams, failure to do so may result in them not being permitted entry into the exam hall. Please note trainers, flip flops, sportswear including hoodies, shorts, crop tops etc are NOT appropriate. It is recommended that students do not bring mobile telephones with them when they have an examination timetabled, however if students need their phones they must be turned off with the battery removed for the duration of the examination, alternatively students can hand their phones in at the start of the exam. The school can take no responsibility in the possibility of loss or damage. Exam Clashes If a student has more than one examination scheduled on the same date at the same time and the exams TOTAL length are longer than 3 hours they will receive a letter with further instructions. GCSE Textiles Revision There will be a revision session on Thursday, 21st June, lesson 3 for ALL textiles students to help prepare them for the exam in the afternoon. M. Suthons-Hart T. Global Tourism re-sit revision on Friday 22nd June during periods 1 to 5 and Monday 25th June 7:30am in room C1.3. Year 13 Geography revision Tuesday 12th June during periods 1 to 5 and Wednesday 13th June during periods 2 and 3 in room D1.7. Science Controlled Assessments All Year 10 students who are doing the Additional Science course will be doing their Biology ISA Controlled Assessment in their Biology lessons, in the three weeks commencing Monday 11th June. This contributes 25% of the marks to their grade. It involves researching a specific practical investigation, planning, carrying out a practical experiment and recording results and two exam papers testing skills in planning, analysing data, drawing conclusions and evaluating. It will take 5 lessons in total and attendance throughout will be crucial to success. All students will require normal Science exam stationary (black pens, pencil, ruler, rubber and calculator). The CGP GCSE Biology Revision Guide, which most students have, gives guidance and support with ISAs on pages 1-11. These cover many of the skills and keywords being tested and will certainly be worth reading and working through in advance. Your child is encouraged to attend. Exam Results – Results Day The Summer 2012 results days are: GCE AS/A2 – Thursday 16th August 2012 from 9.30 am – 1:00 pm GCSE Year 11- Thursday 23rd August 2012 from 9.30 am – 1:00 pm Alternative arrangements will be made for Year 10 results, details to be confirmed Results will be available for collection from the Dining Hall. In special or exceptional circumstances Headteachers can allow a small amount of time out of school. Special or exceptional circumstances do not include the following: · Availability of cheaper holidays · Availability of desired accomodation · Poor weather in school holidays · Overlap with the beginning or the end of term It is not true that students can “catch up” · Research shows that by missing lessons, pupils soon fall behind · Lessons they miss are not r epeated at a later date. It is not true that you are entitled to 10 days extras holiday a year – SCHOOLS ARE QUITE WITHIN THEIR RIGHT TO SAY THAT HOLIDAYS IN TERM TIME ARE NOT ALLOWED Parents who take their children out school during term time without the Headteachers permission risk being issued with a penalty notice or being taken to court. The Arthur terry school is governed by strict Local authority guidelines with regard to authorising such absences and will continue to be guided by the local authority and current legislation with regard to Holidays in term time. School cannot prevent you from taking your holiday however, parents should be aware that the absence unless authorised by the Headteacher will be recorded as a period of unauthorised absence. Uniform As the weather begins to improve, please be aware that the school uniform includes blazers and ties for Years 7 to 10 and polo shirts and sweatshirts for Year 11. Whilst we may decide to have ‘blazer- off’ days, students are expected to come to school in full school uniform everyday. Sixth form dress code is still business wear during the summer term. KS2 Drama Show ‘Alice’ This summer a new exciting project comes to Arthur Terry School, the KS3 Drama show ‘Alice.’ This is a modern interpretation of the famous story ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ The story follows Alice on a journey through the ‘crazy’ world of Wonderland meeting all the strange characters and weird and wonderful places. This production has been an excellent and valuable opportunity for students to meet new friends and to develop their confidence, communication and drama skills. The students have worked extremely hard over the last few months, so please come and support them and join us for fun and laughter on Wednesday 4th July and Thursday 5th July 2012 at 6.30pm. Tickets are £2 and can be purchased via the Drama department. Four Oaks Cluster Choir Forthcoming performances Main Choir Friday 22nd June: Schools Tour 9am-3.30pm Sunday 24th June: 2012 CD recording day. Sunday 1st July: Celebration Jubilation – huge musical evening at Adrian Boult Hall, including our other choirs Youth Voices and The Accidentals. 7.30pm start. Tuesday 3rd July: National Festival of Music for Youth – Symphony Hall. All day. Training Choir Saturday 7th July: St James’ Church, Mere Green, to include Youth Voices. 7pm start. Wednesday 11th July: Joint performance with the Main Choir – 4pm-5.30pm at Four Oaks Primary. Schools Tour! On Friday 22nd June the main choir will be on tour, visiting nine schools in the area. This will give the opportunity to do a short performance and share details about how to join the choir. This is a busy day, but always a fun one – and gives the group chance to really polish up their pieces! Pictures will follow in our next newsletter. Joining the Main Choir! Membership is from Years 5-8 inclusive, and from September 2012 termly subscriptions will be £25 per term. This is very competitive; in return the choir receives quality vocal and choral tuition from trained directors, as well as opportunities to perform in some fabulous venues! Joining the Training Choir This new choir gives great opportunity for pupils in years 2-4 to benefit from vocal training and singing tuition. When they reach Year 5, they can earn a place in the main choir that meets each Wednesday. Any forms received on that day will be entered into a prize draw to win a small toy. At 2.00pm – 2.30pm there will be a Storytime session at Mere Green Library for children aged 0-5 years. Healthy Start Vitamins Did you know that we stock Healthy Start Vitamins at the Hub? These are free to all pregnant women and women with a baby under the age of one, and also to children under the age of four. Saturday 23 June – Baby and Children’s Market at Harvest Fields Centre Come along to this event where we will be having a stall. Here we will be able to give you information about services and activities in the area, and you can also register with us. We will also be really interested to hear your views on the Children’s Centre, so why not pop along and complete our questionnaire. The Baby Children’s Market is an opportunity to buy and sell quality preloved baby and children’s items for up to age 6 years. The organisers say this is “the perfect opportunity for parents to stock up on gently used nursery furniture, clothes, toys, buggies, books, activity toys and just about anything imaginable for baby and child without spending a fortune and promotes recycling at the same time”.
