FoodResearch Context: The eatwell plate Design Theme: Pasta products TextilesContext Using rain forests as the theme, develop ideas for a textile product which include a range of fabrics and components and some modern materials. Heads of School We would like to thank you for your ongoing support in ensuring students remain focused in all aspects of their learning. We have already seen some outstanding results in recent examinations and look forward to building on this in the summer. You may have seen the recent publication of secondary school league tables which report on achievement and attainment in a range of areas. Most importantly, a new Government measure of five A-C’s in ‘good’ GCSE (which measures academic rather than vocational qualifications) has placed us top of all the mixed comprehensive school in Sutton and second in Birmingham. Our Key Stage 4 5 students will be working hard to secure their examination results to enable them to be successful in the summer. The majority of our Year 11 will join our outstanding Sixth Form whilst others will move on to other opportunities in education, employment or training. Our Sixth Form, one of the largest in the West Midlands, continues to go from strength to strength with 500 places planned for September 2012 and the highest retention rates from Year 12 to 13 in Birmingham. None of this would be possible without the continued support of you as parents and carers, and we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of key dates: Wednesday, 22nd February Year 8 Options Parents Information Evening (for Parents only) Wednesday, 29th February Year 8 Options Workshop Evening (for Students and Parents) Friday, 2nd March Year 11 Maths Exam Monday, 5th March Year 11 and10 Maths Exam Monday, 5th March Year 8 Option choices due Monday, 26th March Year 11 workshop for parents students on preparing for exams, click here for a copy of the letter. School Communication Year 12 – For emergencies and instant messaging the school uses Groupcall which is a very popular method of getting letters and messages to parents via text and email. However as students advance into the sixth form it is viewed that using text messaging can support your child further by sending reminders and information directly to them. With your support the school would like to trial this change with the current Year 12 students. Initially and in consultation with the sixth form, the facility will just be used for sending text reminders for events such as forthcoming exam arrangements, revision, assemblies and other sixth form events including trips and enrichment sessions. If you are happy for us to contact your child directly via text message please confirm this with Mrs Humphries on and include your child’s mobile phone number. Year 10 Work Experience Once you have found a placement please submit all of the details online via the school website by clicking on the Work Experience Iink, complete the form and press submit. If you are having difficulty finding a placement or have any queries please contact Jane Humphrey’s on Year 12 and Year 13 Career Opportunities Students need to make sure they are checking both school emails and the 6th Form Blog for information about any Apprenticeships and Job or Career Opportunities which school receives. Students should check the notice board in the 6th Form Centre for the details of 11 apprenticeship opportunities which have been advertised. BMW Plant Hams Hall 2012 Apprenticeship Opportunities This year BMW are recruiting 24 apprentices into 7 different types of apprenticeship of 3 or 4 years duration. Click here for more information. All applications to be made on line before the closing date of Sunday 18th March 2012. School Show Jesus Christ Superstar First performed on Broadway in 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar has proven to be a phenomenal success. Originally produced as an album, Jesus Christ Superstar nearly never made it to the stage at all. Considered too controversial, this masterpiece struggled to find a production team brave enough to stage it. Exploring such timeless themes as friendship, love, trust, betrayal and redemption, it is no wonder that it continues to be reinvented 40 years on. The Arthur Terry School Performing Arts Faculty is proud to present this years production of Jesus Christ Superstar. With a modern concept exploring the power of celebrity and the trappings of fame, this contemporary production of Superstar is brave, exciting and epitomises world class entertainment, that has something for everybody. Bigger and bolder than all productions that have gone before Superstar promises to be something you will never forget. The Box Office is now open. Tickets will be £10 per person, with concessions at £7.50. The request for tickets before the Box Office opening has already been extremely high and in light of Grease selling out in the first week, we advise you to book early to avoid disappointment. To order your tickets, please complete the booking form and return to the school reception f or the attention of Mrs S Bailey. There is a game against Bishop Walsh on Monday 5th March so can all squad members please attend training Citizenship Trip To India Arthur Terry’s Citizenship subject leader Mr Zarifeh is organising a Citizenship trip to India in the February half-term of 2014. This may sound like a long time away but school terms fly by and before we know it we will be boarding the plane for the subcontinent! As well as leading numerous short and long haul trips at previous schools, Mr Zarifeh spent a sabbatical year teaching at Future Hope School in Kolkata, West Bengal. Governors have given the trip their initial approval and travel agencies are preparing costing’s as we speak, which will be detailed in next month’s parental newsletter. Mr Zarifeh is looking to take a maximum of 35 students with five members of staff including Executive Headteacher Mr Stone. The proposed itinerary includes spending some time at Future Hope School in Kolkatta (North East India), travelling by train up to Darjeeling for a short mountain terrain trek, a trip to a coastal resort in Southern India and an internal flight to take in the magnificent Taj Mahal. Students currently in years 8-10 will be eligible for the trip. Watch this space! South Africa Trip 2013 The Arthur Terry School is planning to go back to South Africa in the summer of 2013. Over recent years our school has developed a strong relationship with Rondevlei primary school; found around 500 miles east of Cape Town. Past visits to the school have involved renovating and building of structures that were vital to the running of the school. Arthur Terry students have also run activities for the students from Rondevlei primary school. The trip will be led by Mr Love, a keen explorer that has travelled around the world; including parts of Africa and climbing Kilimanjaro. He feels that the opportunity for students to visit countries like South Africa is essential to a student’s understanding of the world and the realisation to how lucky we are to live in a developed country. The South Africa experience is one of the most demanding but rewarding School trip’s that Arthur Terry offers. Activities such as working closely with the local children, assisting projects within Rondevlei primary school, participating in expeditions into the wilderness and camping in front of an open fire on the beach will all give students an adventure of a lifetime. Once our visit to the school comes to a close we will travel back along the coast to Cape Town. Along the way students will be given a township tour where they will encounter local life and how South Africans live. An activity not to be missed while in South Africa will be to go on game drives in national parks such as Jukani National and spot the top five big game animals (Lions, African elephant, cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros). We will then move onto Elephant feeding and Encountering Eagles. A visit to South Africa would be complete without exploring Cape Town, ascending Table Top Mountain, taking a boat to Robben Island, watching the Cape Penguins that often sun themselves on the beach, and finally take a lesson in African drumming. The experience will be open to students in years 9 to 13 in the current academic year and the cost will not exceed £2,000. Hockey Every Monday at 4:00-5:00pm for Years 7, 8 and 9 boys and girls.
