Your Application

Thank you for considering The Arthur Terry Sixth Form. Applications to our Sixth Form open at 10am on Monday 2nd October 2023 and will close on Monday 15th January, any applications received after this time is now subject to our Late Criteria.

Students can apply to the Sixth Form by completing the following application form.

Our Oversubscription Criteria may also apply to external applicants in the case that the Sixth Form is oversubscribed.

General Entry Requirements

Admission to Year 12 is subject to students meeting the following minimum entry requirements :

  1. Gaining a minimum of 33 points from the student’s 7 best GCSE results which must include English (Language and/or Literature) and Maths at Grade 4 or above.

Up to 2 Vocational Qualifications such as BTEC/RSL/OCR National Qualifications grades can be used for sixth form entry, each qualification will count as 1 of the 7 GCSE grades.

  2. Meeting each of the subject specific entry requirements that are outlined on each subject page.
For example students are also expected to have at least a grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics to study A level Mathematics.

A summary of all the entrance requirements for each subject can be found here.

Calculating your Point Score

  • Points have the same numerical value as the grade achieved. For example a Grade 5 is equivalent to 5 points.
  • Combined Science GCSE counts as two GCSEs and the two grades should be combined. For example a 7/6 would be 13 points.
  • GCSE RE (Short Course) is equivalent to half a GCSE and should not be used within the best 7 GCSE point calculation unless a further Short Course GCSE has been studied.
  • For students who have studied a Level 2 BTEC/RSL or OCR National Qualification the following conversions should be used:

Distinction* : 8 Points
Distinction: 7 Points
Merit: 6 Points
Pass: 5 Points

Your Subject Options

Students will need to study 3 subjects at Arthur Terry which can be a combination of A-Levels, BTECs or RSL qualifications. All A-Level, BTEC and RSL qualifications are two year linear courses.

Students will also need to choose one enrichment option in Year 12 from the following list:

  • Core Maths
  • Extended Project Qualification
  • AS Psychology
  • AS Further Mathematics
  • AS French
  • AS Spanish
  • In Class Support

In choosing your three linear A-level subjects the best general advice is to pick those that you like and are good at, so that you will play to your subject strengths. However, do note that some degree courses and occupations require you to have taken certain subjects at A-Level. If you know what degree you want to take or occupation you want to go in to, then you should check that you are taking the right combination of subjects before you make your final choices.

We also offer some vocational based courses such as BTEC Health and Social Care, BTEC Business and BTEC Sport all at Level 3. These have exactly the same worth as the linear A-level programmes as universities accept them on the same grade and points basis. There is an increased amount of ongoing coursework within the BTEC qualifications and this may suit your style of learning and can be a suitable alternative to taking a linear A-level.

Late Criteria

Any applicants received after the application deadline of 9am on Monday 9th January will be classified as late. Students will only be accepted into the Sixth Form once all students who have applied before the deadline have been offered a place and there is space available in the chosen subjects.

Curriculum Offer

The Sixth Form Curriculum Offer is reviewed each year and the school may need to remove qualifications that are not viable due to low student update. The decision to remove subjects from the curriculum offer will be made as early as possible in the Spring Term. Students will be contacted by the Sixth Form Term if a qualification is removed and an alternative qualification will be offered where appropriate. Qualifications may still be removed from the Sixth Form Curriculum Offer after GCSE results day dependant on final enrolment of students.

Oversubscription Criteria for External Applicants

The Arthur Terry School operates a waiting list process for Year 12 admissions in the event that the Year 12 admissions number is oversubscribed. Applicants who are placed on the waiting list will only be offered a place in Year 12 if places become available in the subjects chosen by the applicant. Places will be allocated in accordance with the oversubscription criteria :

  • Looked After Children and previously Looked After Children (in public care)
  • Students who live nearest the Arthur Terry School (straight line distance measured from home to school)

In the event that individual subjects are oversubscribed following the admissions process, places will again be allocated for each subject based on the oversubscription criteria above.

Students who are unable to study a subject (due to oversubscription) will be offered an alternative subject where available.
